George Sale, a solicitor by profession, dedicated his translation of the Qur’an to John Lord Carteret in 1734. Known to be the first direct translation from Arabic into English, it also includes a lengthy commentary on the historical, religious and ritual aspects of Islam. The volume also contains a number of illustrations, among which are ‘A Plan of the Temple of Mecca’ and ‘View of the Temple of Mecca’.
