Bowl

Location: Iraq

Materials: fine earthenware, painted in monochrome lustre over an opaque white glaze

Dimensions: 4.3 x 18cm

Accession Number: POT 502

Other Notes:

The bowl is decorated with a highly stylized human figure holding a goblet, and a short inscription – clearly part of a commonly used formula, ‘Trust [in God and you will be gratified], ask [and you will be given]’ – all on a dotted background.

The bowl is heavily made, with a fine yellow fabric, and is entirely covered with an opaque white glaze, except at the foot. The exterior is decorated with alternating tear-drops and circles.
