The inscription within the floral wreath at the top of the curtain reads, ‘This noble curtain is for the Damascus Gate’. The tughra within the wreath at the other end of the curtain is that of the Ottoman sultan Abdulhamid II. The text between them is Qur’an, Surat al-Hashr, verses 22–24.
