Banner with the Ottoman Coat-of-Arms

Location: Istanbul

Materials: gold-coloured silk with red, green abd brick-coloured appliqués, relief-embroidered in silver and silver-gilt wire over card and cotton thread padding

Dimensions: 114 x 105cm

Accession Number: TXT 429

Other Notes: This is probably the central part of a banner used in the surreh processions. The name of Sultan ‘Abdulhamid II appears above the coat-of-arms and, below it, is the phrase al-muluk mulhamun (‘the kings are inspired’). The names of Allah and Muhammad are to either side. The small roundels contain the names of the Orthodox caliphs and some of the Companions of the Prophet.
