Narrow-necked Flask

Location: Iran or Central Asia

Materials: stonepaste ware, decorated in reserve under a bright cobalt-blue glaze; silver collar a restoration

Dimensions: 31cm (height)

Accession Number: POT 1118

Other Notes:

Although the shape of this flask was inspired by Chinese models, the almond-shaped medallions enclosed by confronted fishes on a ground of cloud scrolls are far removed from the decoration of Chinese blue-and-white wares. The scrolls may well have been inspired by contemporary Iranian Qur’an illumination in chinoiserie style.
