Islamic decorative motifs, possibly derived from manuscript illumination or metalwork, have been freely interpreted to produce a design at some remove from the original source of inspiration. An identical case, made by Gustave Renault for Cartier Paris stock in 1930, was formerly in the Cartier collection.
